The West Fork Ski Track is a cross country ski track that doubles as a snowshoe playground. Just 10 miles east of Pagosa Springs near Treasure Falls, it's located right before the ascent to Wolf Creek Pass.
Turn in at the Bruce Spruce Ranch sign, make your way into the San Juan Forest parking lot area, and off you go.
The trail is flat and steady for a good while before it begins to crawl up the mountain, through pines and aspens, giving you snow-capped views of mountains and cliffs.
You might even catch sight of frozen Treasure Falls if it's dead winter.
When we went, the afternoon sun was melting the snow off the trees. So the only noise we heard out there (besides our crunching snowshoes) was the gentle flop of snow falling through branches.
There are miles of trails to hike through. We wound up the side of the mountain and came back down, but you can hit the flats for as long as you like.
Just remember that in the afternoon, the light vanishes with surprising speed, and with it goes the warmth.
Snowshoe rentals, maps, and helpful directions were available to us at Ski & Bow Rack (970-264-2370) on the east side of Pagosa Springs.
If you enjoy snowshoeing in Colorado, you might also enjoy Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.
