The Garden of the Gods is a geological freakshow. Primarily made up of giant orange sandstone fins that tower to heights of several hundred feet, these monoliths sit at the base of Pike's Peak, offering a number of stunning views.
One of Colorado Springs' busiest summer attractions, Garden of the Gods is even more mesmerizing in the winter, if only for all that orange rock against bright white snow. And...it's free!
Located on the west side of the city, the Garden of the Gods provides a fascinating look into one of Colorado's strangest natural wonders.
Some of the highlights include rock formations with names like Kissing Camels, Siamese Twins, and Balanced Rock. You might often feel like you're in a Road Runner cartoon.
There is a relatively new visitor's center just outside the park that has exceptional views from inside and outside. The center serves food and beverages and also has an educational area with displays about the park's wildlife, how the park itself was formed, and how it came to be named.
Within the park there is also a "trading post" where you can buy souveniers, cowboy hats, and refreshements.
This is a drive-through park, and there are several places to pull your car over and take photos or just stand and marvel at the orange giants.
But just because there's a little snow on the ground shouldn't stop you from walking through the park's many trails. And if you're feeling a little adventurous, there is year-round horseback riding, giving you a totally different perspective of the park.
Riding a horse through the Garden of the Gods in the winter may be an adventure you never forget.
